CATFISH (Silurus glanis)

It is a freshwater fish, family of Siluridae, order of SILURIFORMES, Since its introduction into the reservoir in Mequinenza 1974 -From their habitat in large rivers of Central Europe- has spread to other parts of the Ebro basin, along the river Ebro and its tributaries, especially the river Segre. It has also been the subject of illegal introductions carried out by individuals in other rivers, reservoirs and lakes in Spain. The final report on its unwelcome presence known was made in October 2009 the Ministry of Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana and refers to the presence of these fish in the reservoir Forata (Hoya de Buñol).

It is a benthic fish, endowed with great beards . It ichthyophagous, but does not reject other vertebrates.

Reproduction

Spawning from May to July. The male digs a shallow nest, in areas of heavy vegetation, and the female lays thousands of eggs each 3 mm. Draws 20000 a 25000 per kilo. After 3 a 10 days of incubation, during which the nest is guarded by the male, The eggs hatch into tiny larvae tadpole-like. These fingerlings grow quickly, especially if temperatures are high and have enough food. They can measure 35 cm in length after a year and a 50 cm at two years, and reach sexual maturity when they weigh 1 a 2 kg, (nine in colder climates). A few catfish 25 years weighs 65 kg.

FOOD

It feeds on all types of prey and carrion. In the juvenile phase of the fund eats small invertebrates and adult eats mainly fish such as carp, bearded, zander mostly bleak in order any fish that is eating up even in your area including, but also other animals, ducks, Rodents, snakes, frogs, CRABS…, they catch by suction with his big mouth.

As expected in a turbid water fish active in the dark, not detect prey by sight, but does so mainly through other senses. Have electroreceptors in barbels, which are also touch-function, in the mandible and the lateral-line body vibration-sensitive, and chemoreceptors (taste) in sensory whiskers, in the mouth and other body parts. Addition, has a good nose and a fine ear can detect it sounds great out of water produced. Danube fishermen attract him banging on the water surface with a sort of stick called clonk and is also attracted by the low-frequency sound waves. Remains very active in winter, hidden in the background, and eats very little.

The catfish is the biggest fish in European waters, and one of the most voluminous water epicontientales; can be very large concessional, to 500 cm 300 kg.

THE INTRODUCTION OF CATFISH IN SPAIN

Suddenly it late 1970, early 1980, begin to fish in the Ebro River, passing through the town of Mequinenza, at the confluence of the rivers Segre and Cinca, a strange fish, similar to catfish, but only like. We’re talking catfish.
The catfish was introduced in Spain in the spring of 1974.
Someone had taken at your own risk this decision. Were transported from Germany, from the River Danube, 32 fry, in a wooden bowl. They crossed the border without any problem, It is argued that these fish were to be used as live bait, for pike fishing.

The officer who reviewed the issue do not see anything unusual and catfish cross the border by La Junquera without being cleared through customs and of course without paying taxes.
A few hours after they are released in full on the river Ebro, Near the town of Mequinenza.

Nobody could suspect or think about what was brewing. That forms an illegally introduced species in our waters would change the lives of several people and as Mequinenza, would become the cradle of European catfish, thus helping to boost tourism in the area.
Person or persons were responsible for its introduction is the least important is.
The fact is attributed to Mr. Roland Lorkowski, Born in Cologne, Germany, in year 1953. Ph.D. in biology and specialize in ecosystems and freshwater fish.

According to their comments (magazine “Hunting & Fishing” No 548), Ribarroja Reservoir suffered a strong ecological imbalance that was in almost total loss of fish predators, particularly pike and black bass (non-native species). In those years pescatas of these species were spectacular, but apparently were destined to disappear or diminish in an important way.
Since the creation of reservoir Ribarroja and five years after, there was a boom with the pike because of the abundant food available to. According LORKOWSKI, Pike had the hours counted. (Today years 2001 have little presence).
The water level variations was suffering heavy; variations in spring jeopardize and destroy the eggs of this species.

The pike is a fish that needs to spawn in shallow waters, preferably with soft vegetation. The ideal area looking for the pike is bounded 20 Y 30 cm. deep and that is during the spring, weekends there is a noticeable change in level, Climbing on the subway to five feet and down again on Monday to the previous level. The pike takes to move to areas flooded meadows for the start and once fertilized by irrigation this male, the eggs are deposited enters the vegetation and suffer the reservoir level variation, stay at least one week in the open and die.

With bass impact than it otherwise. The bass spawn in other areas and further. The fundamental cause is the following:
At the end of the reservoir and as happened with the pike, the bass found in the La Granja D’ Escarp, to Fraga, a true haven for spawning; this was a clean water area and background madrilla burdensome to glut, preferred prey by the bass from the rest of this reservoir.

The clusters of this species in those years, was crazy.
The decrease was mainly due to bass two types of pollution that ended with the best spawning sites had. One was the pollution discharges, among others, litter bins located in the upper Segre and Cinca rivers and the other was the indiscriminate extraction of gravel for construction, this action that causes the accumulation of sediment and placed drowns, madrilla both, as bass.
With the above proposed, we have on paper a very clear: predators are mainly pike and black bass and predators are primarily cyprinids.
The consequences that flow from the reservoir Ribarroja lack of pike and large decrease in black bass are solely, inter, el de Carpasio increase incontrolado, with the serious risk that this entails.
The proliferation of tents that can reach, can be substantial and yet very serious, for once exceeded the maximum of carp per square foot than a given ecosystem can tolerate, imbalance occurs and the consequences are slow in coming. Excessive carp population, can teenr very bad impact on an ecosystem for many reasons. One fundamental is the reverse of the specific function of the species, carp in abundance as, happens to be the predator fish to be the predator. A greater number of tents is for more food and living space.

When low on food and living space be restricted, is that, action of carp affects other species in the ecosystem affect and may even be a case of taking over the reservoir total.
In the same way, Town of excessive carp, affects the health of water, action because the funds are constantly foraging, pollution of water is greatly increased, This same pollution also makes a lot of them die and rot them on the surface with the risk of epidemics, these foci of infection for coastal populations.

! FOR THIS REASON COMES THE CATFISH

The catfish is a fish that grows extremely fast if you have the conditions to favor, and this reservoir, by the configuration of the area, background, depth and food, development is as much, than the rest of Europe.
The catfish is perfectly adapted, carp population has been controlled and the growth rate is much higher than the rest of Europe.
Was it really well ?
Do we have to catfish in Spain because someone decided for themselves, that had to control the population of fish species in the reservoir Ribarroja ?
What do the fishing of certain fish species that have been eroded their pescatas ?
What do black bass fishermen, have also been severely reduced their pescatas ?
“This is because of the introduction of catfish ? o It has also helped the introduction of LUCIOPERCA ?.
If the owner of the dam before the tent was now so is the catfish and walleye.
Did anyone think to introduce crocodiles to stop the excessive population of catfish ?
In short and in all honesty, we are in the XXI century and we have a fishing paradise both in the reservoir Ribarroja, as in the reservoir Mequinenza.
Many fishermen attracted by this new species and prove to sit when fishing a monster that can reach 100 Weight kilos, originate from many points of the Spanish territory and not only that but also from many parts of the geography of Europe, Great Britain. Netherlands, Germany, Italy, French, etc.…
This results in an influx of tourism to the area and the economic consequences that this implies.
What is the difference between entering a non-native species that brings wealth and rampant construction that took place in the decade of the 60 in the Spanish Mediterranean coast ?.
Spain became known through its tourist and continue to sell.

What’s wrong with that ?
